King of the Hill Format 
Rotations reduced from 4 to 3 man 

9 Chapters, 20 Games each Chapter, rotating schedule, etc. 

At the end of the regular season, 6 teams qualified for the playoffs.  The King of the Hill format would be used in the playoffs with the highest ranked teams needing to lose more games than the lower ranked teams given their regular season records in the 180 regular season games.  As a result, the following 6 teams would compete for the championship:

Milwaukee  6
Cincinnati 5 
Los Angeles 4 
San Francisco 3 
Detroit 2 
Washington 1 

Here are the results:

Game 1 
Washington 6   Detroit 4

HR:  Held (5) 

Notes:  Mickey Lolich and the Tigers enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 lead going into the top of the 9th until Lolich ran out of gas and turned the lead over to the Tiger bullpen.  The Senators continued to act like a cat with 9 lives by exploding for 5 runs in the top of the 9th to escape with a 6-4 win. 


Game 2
San Francisco 1  Washington 0 
W: Marichal (3-3) 
L:  Ortega  (1-2)
HR: McCovey (6)

Notes:  Juan Marichal threw a complete game shutout and McCovey's solo shot led to the 1-0 Giants win and the elimination of the Senators.  Marichal fanned 9 batters and only allowed 3 hits. 

Game 3 
San Francisco 1  Los Angeles 0 
W:  Shaw (5-1)
L:   Koufax (3-3) 
S:   Priddy (3) 

Notes:  Koufax fans 7 and allows only 1 ER but Shaw shuts down the anemic Dodger offense for a 1-0 Giants win.  Giants' staff now has 18 scoreless innings.

L :  Herbel (2-2) 
HR:  Pinson (3) F. Robinson (2)

Notes:  Sammy Ellis throws complete game 4 hit shutout and fans 9 for the win. 


Game 5 
Milwaukee 5  Cincinnati 3 
W: Cloninger (7-1)
L:   Maloney (5-3)
S:   P. Niekro (2)
HR:  Torre (12) 

Notes:  Braves rock Maloney for 4 runs in the 1st and Cloninger and Phil Niekro hold the lead. 


Game 6
Milwaukee 4 Cincinnati 2 
W: Osinski (2-1)
L:  Craig (0-1)
S:  Olivo (5) 
HR: F. Alou (5)  H. Aaron (8)  M. Jones (6)

Notes:  Braves hit 3 bombs and use their superior bullpen to hand the Reds their 2nd playoff loss. 


Game 7

W: Brewer (3-0)
L:   O'Dell  (3-1)
HR: M.Jones (7)

Notes:  Blasingame and Drysdale battle to a 2-2 tie until Wes Parker knocks in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th as the defending 1965 MLB World Series champs hand the Braves their first playoff loss.

HR: McCovey (7)

Notes: Willie Davis posts 1R, 3H, 1RBI and a SB to lead the Dodger attack. Maury Wills picks up his 16th SB. 


Game 9

HR: W. Davis (3) Roseboro (1) Cash (3)

Notes:  Roseboro goes 4 for 5 with a double and home run.  Wills steals #17.  Tigers eliminated. 

Game 10

W: T. Davidson (2-3)
L:   Brewer (3-1)

Notes:  Cardenas hits a RBI triple in the bottom of the 8th and Davidson throws a scoreless 9th to hand the Dodgers their 2nd playoff loss. 



Game 11
San Francisco 5  Cincinnati 0
W: Marichal (4-3)
L:  Nuxhall  (4-3) 
HR: Hart (3) 

Notes: Marichal throws his second straight complete game shutout, fanning 7 while scattering 3 hits.  


Game 12: 
San Francisco 9 Milwaukee 1 
W: Shaw (6-1)
L:  Cloninger (7-2)
HR: McCovey (8)  Hart (4) 

Notes:  McCovey goes 2 for 5 with a HR and 2 RBIs.  Brave fans watch their ace go down in flames while the Giants survive to fight another day. 


Game 13:

L:  B. MIller (1-1)
HR:  Hart (5) 

Notes:  Hart hits a 10th inning solo shot and Henry holds the Dodgers scoreless in the bottom of the 10th. 

Game 14
Cincinnati 3  San Francisco 2 
W: T. Davidson (3-3)
L:  Murakami (0-1)
HR: McCovey (9) Pinson (4) 

Notes:  Marichal and Maloney fight to a 2-2 tie over 8 innings.  Giants' bullpen is exhausted given 3 straight playoff games so they reach down to Murakami but he gives up a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th to Deron Johnson for the loss.  The Giants are now eliminated from the playoffs.  Only the Reds, Dodgers and Braves remain. 

Game 15
Cincinnati 5  Milwaukee 2 
W:  Craig (1-1)
L:   P. Niekro (3-2) 
S:  McCool (2) 
HR: H. Aaron (2) (10) 

Notes: Reds post 3 runs in the top of the 9th for the win.  Leo Cardenas went 2 for 3 and scores 2R. 


Game 16

W: Blasingame (2-2)
L:  Tsitouris (1-1)
HR: H. Aaron (11)  G. Oliver (6)

Notes: Blasingame and Olivo shutout the Reds.  Hank Aaron continues his home run barrage. 


Game 17
Milwaukee 6  Los Angeles 2 
W:  Osinski (3-1) 
L:   Koufax  (4-4) 
HR: None 

Notes:  Down go the Dodgers !!!!!  The Braves eliminate the 1965 World Series Champs.  Even Koufax could not save the day. Braves score 4 in the top of the 8th to seal the win.

L:   Maloney (5-4)

Notes: Braves break open the game with 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th.
