The top 6 teams will qualify for the playoffs. The higher they finish, the more losses it will take for a team to be eliminated in the playoffs.
CURRENT PLAYOFF TEAMS
Pittsburgh 6-3
Houston 6-3
Kansas City 6-3
Los Angeles 6-4
Detroit 4-3
Baltimore 4-4
CHAPTER 3 NOTES
7 Shutouts were tossed during the 20 games in the chapter.
Pittsburgh (6-3) was the exception to the rule, defeating the Reds 11-6. The Pirates are utilizing a lineup that includes Matty Alou, Manny Mota, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Donn Clendenon, a double play combo of Gene Alley and Bill Mazeroski. The Pirates playoff hopes will depend on the ability of their pitching staff. Bob Veale is the ace of the staff.
Houston (6-3) downed Veale and the Pirates 2-1 thanks to Larry Dierker. The Astros down the Pirates 9-3 thanks to Rusty Stuab ( 3H-2B-3B-3RBI).
Don Sutton ( LAD) threw a 1 hit shutout to down the Astros 1-0. Koufax followed with a 1 hit shutout over the Mets 3-0 until the Orioles burned Jim Brewer for 5 runs to hand the Dodgers a 6-4 loss.
In AL games, Wickersham threw a 4 hit shutout for a 4-0 win over KCA.
Jim Palmer threw a 4 hit shutout for a 6-0 win over the Red Sox.
Mickey Mantle hit a walk off grand slam for a 7-5 win over Baltimore.
It is early in the season but you have to like Johnny Briggs' slash line. Not bad from the man from Patterson New Jersey.
