1966 GOWDY PROJECT: PIRATES HOLD ON TO 1ST AFTER 100 GAMES
POWELL MAKES BID FOR TRIPLE CROWN 5 HR 20 RBI 385 AVG
THE PROJECT
The project is named after Curt Gowdy, my favorite sports announcer during my younger days. He really made you understand the game from the front office to the training room. Above all, he told you the story of all the players and how they went from the rural country side to the major league cathedrals.

PROCESS
I play 160 games made up of 8 chapters of 20 games each. The more a team wins. the more games they play. When I was a kid back in Northeast KC, we only had 1 basketball court in Budd Park so we played some pick up games and your team stayed on the court as long as the team won. The king of the hill format works the same way.
The 6 teams with the most wins at the end of the 160 games qualify for the playoffs ranked 1 thru 6. Here is the playoff schedule:
Team 6 vs Team 5 ( 1 Game)
Winner vs Team 4 ( Best of 3 )
Winner vs Team 3 ( Best of 5 )
Winner vs Team 2 ( Best of 5 )
Winner vs Team 1 ( Best of 7 )
CHAPTER 5 NOTES
CURRENT PLAYOFF LEADERS
1. Pittsburgh Pirates 15-5
2. Baltimore Orioles 14-5
3. Los Angeles Dodgers 10-6
4. Kansas City Athletics 9-4
5. California Angels 8-5
6. Houston Astros 8-5
TEAM NOTES
1. PITTSBURGH
W/L : 15-5
OPS : 1st
ERA: 5th
FLD : 8th
Hitting Stars
Donn Clendenon 3HR/18 RBI/ 407 448/667/1115
Manny Mota 3HR/14 RBI/ 387 426/677/1104
Matty Alou 2HR/ 9 RBI / 385 424/538/962
Roberto Clemente 5HR/ 19 RBI/ 244 277/456/732
Pitching Stars
Steve Blass 3-0 2.05
Vern Law 3-1 2.48
Bob Veale 3-0 2.80
W. Fryman 3-1 4.25
Billy O'Dell 3 SV 1.08
Overview
Mota has started a number of games at 3B and the increase in offense overrides his lack of range. The Pirates are the best hitting team in the project so their success will come down to how well they can continue their offensive surge.
2. BALTIMORE
W/L: 14-5
OPS: 3rd
ERA: 2nd
FLD: 10th
Hitting Stars
Name HR/RBI/ AVG OBP/SLG/OPS
Boog Powell 5/20/385 422/641/1083
Russ Snyder 2/5/ 338 375/500/875
Brooks Robinson 4/18/286 317/545/863
Pitching Stars
Eddie Watt 3-0 3.04
Jim Palmer 3-2 323 28 K
Steve Barber 2-0 2.22
Dave McNally 1-1 2.86
Stu Miller 3SV 0.43
Overview
Orioles won the 1966 World Series and they look like they have the best balance of hitting and pitching in the project. The Pirates may have better hitting and the Dodgers have the 1-2 punch of Koufax and Drysdale but the Orioles are the best bet to win it all over the long run. Interesting to see Boog Powell in the hunt for the traditional triple crown and the sabermetric triple crown as well.
3. LOS ANGELES
W/L : 10-6
OPS : 9th
ERA: 9th
FLD : 6th
Hitting Stars
Name OBP/SLG/OPS
John Roseboro 382/420/802
Maury Wills 5 SB
Pitching Stars
Don Sutton 3-1 2.48 23K
Sandy Koufax 2-1 2.30 25K
Don Drysdale 1-2 1.38 23K
Overview
You cannot rule out any team with 3 HOF starters but Dodger nation is disappointed with team under performing in many categories. A 4-0 record in 1 run games has been the saving grace at this point in the project.
4. KANSAS CITY
W/L: 9-4
OPS: 8th
ERA: 1st
FLD: 4th
Hitting Stars
Mike Hershberger 333/652/986
Bert Campaneris 378/488/ 866
Pitching Stars
Jim Nash 1-1 1.78
Jim Hunter 2-1 3.42 22K
Blue Moon Odom 2-1 2.08
Lew Krause 2-1 0.98
Overview
The Cinderella story of the project !!!!
This team will go as far as its' starting flamethrowers will take it. Chapter 5 dealt the team a heavy blow when Campy went down with a season ending injury in game 88. Maybe he can come back near the end of the playoffs ( game 106 ) but the injury raises major concerns for any reasonable playoff hopes.
5 (Tie) CALIFORNIA
W/L: 8-5
OPS: 6th
ERA: 3rd
FLD : 19th
Pitching Leaders
Bob Lee 3 SV 0.48 ERA
Marcelino Lopez 1-1 3.26
George Burnett 1-1 2.75
Hitting Leaders
Jay Johnstone 381/550/ 931
Jim Fregosi 379/434/813
Paul Schaal 411/ 500/ 911
Rick Reichardt 321/500/ 821 4 HR
Overview
Another team which will go as far as the pitching staff takes it. Paul Schaal has provided a spark for the offense ever since he was moved to the lead off spot in the lineup. Dean Chance always has a chance to throw a no hitter or get rocked for 5 runs in the first.
5 (Tie) HOUSTON
W/L: 8-5
OPS: 2nd
ERA: 13th
FLD: 14th
Hitting Leaders
Rusty Staub 404/593/996
Chuck Harrison: 368/538/904
Pitching Leaders
Mike Cuellar 2-1 1.14
Overview
It is amazing the Astros rank 2nd in OPS until the stat sheet reveals all the bench players and pitchers are hitting 541 in 24 ABs. It is doubtful the Astros will hold onto this playoff slot so Astro fans should enjoy it while it lasts.
