GOWDY MEMORIAL PROJECT: 1966 IP CHAPTER 6
PIRATES CONTINUE TO LEAD THE PACK
THE PROJECT
Hello baseball fans ....
The project is named after Curt Gowdy, my favorite sports announcer during my younger days. He really made you understand the game from the front office to the training room. Above all, he told you the story of all the players and how they went from the rural country side to the major league cathedrals.

PROCESS
I play 180 games made up of 9 chapters of 20 games each. The more a team wins, the more games they play. When I was a kid back in Northeast KC, we only had 1 basketball court in Budd Park so we played some pick up games and your team stayed on the court as long as the team won. The king of the hill format works the same way.
The 6 teams with the most wins at the end of the 180 games qualify for the playoffs ranked 1 thru 6. Here is the playoff schedule:
Team 6 vs Team 5 ( 1 Game)
Winner vs Team 4 ( Best of 3 )
Winner vs Team 3 ( Best of 5 )
Winner vs Team 2 ( Best of 5 )
Winner vs Team 1 ( Best of 7 )
CHAPTER 6 NOTES
120 games are in the books and with 60 games left in the 1966 project, the following teams are leading the pack in the playoff race for the top 6 spots:
1. PITTSBURGH 15-6
2. BALTIMORE 15-7
3. KANSAS CITY 10-5
4. LOS ANGELOS 10-7
5. CALIFORNIA 9-6
6. MINNESOTA 8-5
7. HOUSTON 8-6
Here is a breakdown on the top teams in the pennant race
( Hitter slash line (AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS) League Rank )
( Pitcher stat line ((W-L) ERA ( K-BB) Rank )
1. PIRATES
W/L 15-6
Hit 1st
Pitch 5th
Field 5th
Hitting Leaders
Clendenon 400/446/647/1.093
Mota 388/425/657/1.081
Alou. M. 385/424/538/962
Pitching Leaders
Veale (3-0) 3.40 (45-14)
Law (3-1) 2.48 ( 16-5)
Blass ( 3-0) 2.05 (10-13)
ODell 3 saves
Notes
The Pirates are running on all cylinders and have all the ingredients in place to win the World Series. An interesting strategy is using the versatile Manny Mota at 3B and CF which provides the necessary depth to survive any serious injuries. Clendenon is in the hunt for the triple crown while Bob Veale leads the project with 45Ks and is tied with a number of hurlers with 3 wins. O'Dell anchors the pen with 3 saves. Pirate nation is singing their favorite song
2. BALTIMORE
W/L 15-7
HIT 4th
PITCH 3rd
FIELD 12th
Hitting Leaders
Powell 367/412/633/1.046
B. Robinson 286/312/571/884
P. Blair 310/305/500/865
Pitching Leaders
Palmer (3-2) 2.74 (32-22)
McNally (1-2) 3.76 (23-6)
Barber (3-0) 2.45 (15-8)
Notes
The 66 AL champs are right on the heels of the Pirates. One area of concern is the 12 ranking in fielding which should improve over the remainder of the project. Boog Powell is a strong MVP candidate while Steve Barber should contend for the Cy Young award. Frank Robinson should heat up before 180 games are in the books. The Orioles seem more balanced than the Pirates so Baltimore fans still have their eye on the prize, especially if the Pirate bats go cold in the post season.
3. KANSAS CITY
W/L 10-5
HIT 7th
PITCH 1st
FIELD 3rd
Hitting Leaders
Campaneris 333/370/451/821/ 8 SB
Pitching Leaders
Hunter (3-1) 2.93 (28-11)
Nash (1-1) 1.78 (14-8)
Odom (2-1) 2.08 (7-9)
Krausse (2-1) 0.90 (9-8)
Aker 2 saves
Notes
OMG .... 60 games left and the As are still holding up thanks to outstanding young starters and some surprising defense. Then there is the exciting Campy spraying hits over the ballpark and leading the project with 8 steals despite 2 short term injuries. KC joy is reaching a fever pitch ...
4. LOS ANGELOS
W/L 10-7
HIT 9th
PITCH 7th
FIELD 6th
Hitting Leaders
Lefebvre 4HR-13RBI-247AVG
Wills 5 SB
Pitching Leaders
Koufax (2-2) 2.37 (30-11)
Sutton (3-1) 2.48 (23-5)
Drysdale (1-2) 2.54 (23-3)
Notes
The Dodgers will go as far as their HOF starters will take them. The hitters are currently slumbering and need a wake up call. Look for Willie Davis to provide more spark over the last 60 games.
5. CALIFORNIA
W/L 9-6
HIT 6th
PITCH 2nd
FIELD 6th
Hitting Leaders
Johnstone 326/348/512/859
Schaal 316/381/456/837
Fregosi 305/369/458/827
Knoop 351/377/439/816
Pitching Leaders
Brunet (2-1) 1.95 (17-7)
Notes
The Angels have the 2nd best pitching staff at the present time and they look like they can retain that ranking given their starting rotation. Another surprising team which needs to prove they will not wilt over the last 60 games.
6. MINNESOTA
W/L 8-5
HIT 8th
PITCH 2nd
FIELD 19th
Hitting Leaders
Oliva 333/374/426/805
Tovar 308/351/404/755
Pitching Leaders
Kaat (1-2) 3.86 (19-5)
Grant (1-1) 3.38 (6-5)
Boswell (1-1) 3.32 (10-5)
Notes
The Twins woke up and went 4-1 in Chapter 6 so the rest of the league should watch out or this team can go all the way ...
7. HOUSTON
W/L 8-6
HIT 3rd
PITCH 13th
FIELD 17th
Pitching Leaders
Cuellar (2-1) 1.14 (17-6)
Dierker (1-0) 2.65 (8-4)
Hitting Leaders
Staub 351/393/ 561/955
Wynn 241/290/569/859
Notes
Can the Astros make it to the playoffs ?? True, players like Staub, Wynn, Morgan, Dierker and Cuellar are a strong foundation but the supporting cast does not look like it will be enough
