1966 GOWDY MEMORIAL: CHAPTER 7

              TOY CANNON LEADS ASTROS'   SURGE

THE PROJECT

Hello baseball fans....
This project is named after Curt Gowdy, my favorite broadcaster.  Gowdy made sure his listeners understood every ballplayer's story of their journey to the majors and their virtues and vices on the field.

PROJECT TOOLS

Digital Diamond Board Game Companion
Google Dice Roller
Liberty IP League Rules ( Modified)
King of the Hill Schedule Format
1966 Inside Pitch Game and Cards

PROCESS

I play 180 games made up of 9 chapters of 20 games each.  The more a team wins, the more games they play.  When I was a kid back in Northeast KC, we only had 1 basketball court in Budd Park so we played some pick up games and  your team stayed on the court as long as the team won.  The king of the hill format works the same way.

The 6 teams with the most wins at the end of the 180 games qualify for the playoffs ranked 1 thru 6.  Here is the playoff schedule:

Team 6 vs Team 5 ( 1 Game)
Winner  vs Team 4  ( Best of 3 )
Winner vs Team 3   ( Best of 5  )
Winner  vs Team 2   (  Best of 5 )
Winner   vs Team 1  ( Best of 7 )

CHAPTER 7 NOTES

140 games are in the books and a major shakeup in the standings is the lead storyline in Chapter 7.   Here are the current leaders in the playoff race:

1.
KANSAS CITY A'S  16-6

League Rankings
OPS  5th
ERA  1st
FLD   3rd

Campy    2         7   873    11
Gosger    2        8    843

Notes

The Athletics went  5-1 in Chapter 7.  The 5 wins propelled the A's from 3rd to 1st in the playoff rankings.  The As had impressive wins over the Twins and the Orioles.

Catfish Hunter is 2nd in the Cy Young race according to computer voting.
Hunter leads the league in wins and posts second in strikeouts.

Jack Aker leads the league with 3 saves.

"Campy" Campaneris leads the league with 11 SBs.

Kansas City continues to lead the league in ERA and ranks 3rd in team defense.  A's fans are comparing the team to the 69 Miracle Mets ....

2.  Pittsburgh Pirates  15-7

League Rankings
OPS  1
ERA  6
FLD  6
RDIF  56

Pitching Leaders  W-L   ERA  K

M. Mota               3          14   1044
B. Bailey              2           10   945

Notes

The Twins beat the Pirates 5-3 in chapter 3 for a 0-1 record.
The loss dropped the Pirates into 2nd place in the playoff race.

Donn Clendenon is currently 3rd in the MVP computer vote while Steve Blass ranks 5th in the Cy Young voting.

The Pirates have the highest run differential in the league (56) which is the first tie breaker in determining playoff slots.

Clemente ranks 5th in the HR race but suffers from a subpar 686 OPS rate.  Look for Clemente and Stargell (701) to heat up over the last 2 chapters.  If they do, the Pirates could grab the number 1 ranking in the playoff race.

3.  Baltimore Orioles  15-8

League Rankings
ERA   2
OPS   4
FLD  12
RDIF 25

Pitching Leaders   W-L    ERA   K
Jim Palmer             3-2     2.74    32
Dave McNally        1-2     3.76    23
Eddie Watt              3-0     3.69    17
Steve Barber           3-0     2.45    15
Stu    Miller             0-2     1.12      8   3 saves

Hitting Leaders       HR   RBI   OPS  SB
Boog Powell              6       22   992
Brooks Robinson       6       22   906
Paul  Blair                  1       10   860

Notes
The A's beat the Orioles 5-4 in Chapter 7.
Baltimore dropped from 2nd to 3rd in the playoff race.

Brooks Robinson holds a small lead over Boog Powell for the Project MVP race ( 57-55).

If the Orioles are going to defend their 1966 MLB World Champion title they need to get more production out of Frank Robinson ( 2 HR-12 RBI-687 OPS) and improve their fielding which ranks 12th out of 20 teams.

4.  Houston Astros   14-7

League Rankings
OPS  2
ERA  7
FLD   16
RDIF  38

Hitting Leaders  HR  RBI  OPS  SB
Joe Morgan           1   13     832     1
Jimmy Wynn         7   18     957
Rusty Staub           6    13    957
Sonny Jackson       0      4    554     10

Pitching Leaders    W-L   ERA   K
Mike Cuellar           3-2    1.93   32
Turk Farrell             4-0     2.31   19
Larry Dierker           3-0    2.25    15

Notes

Turk Farrell is currently ranked 1st in the Cy Young voting.

Jimmy Wynn leads the project with 7 HRs and ranks 4th in MVP voting.

Rusty Staub ranks second in HRs and ranks 5th in MVP voting.

The Astros went 6-1 in chapter 7 which included blowout wins over the Red Sox (11-0) and the Indians (12-0).  Houston did not play any of the current playoff leaders in the chapter.

Joe Morgan hit 481 in the chapter.

5.  Los Angelos Dodgers  11-7

League Rankings
OPS  10
ERA    4
FLD    7
RDIF  14

Pitching Leaders   W-L   ERA   SO
Sandy Koufax        2-2    2.37    30
Don Drysdale         2-2    2.57    26
Don Sutton             3-1    2.48     23

Hitting Leaders       HR    RBI    OPS   SB
Maury Wills               0         3    683       6
John Roseboro            0        3     801

Notes
It is hard to see how the Dodgers made it to the 1966 MLB World Series with just an average offense.  Still, the trio of Koufax, Drysdale and Sutton can always get hot and shutdown any offense in the playoffs.
The Dodgers defeated the Giants 3-2 and are the king of the hill going into chapter 8.

6.  Minnesota Twins  10-7

League Rankings
OPS  3
ERA  10
FLD    9
RDIF  6

Pitching Leaders   W-L    ERA    SO
Mudcat Grant        2-1      2.37     10
Jim Perry               3-0      3.38      17

Hitting Leaders      HR    RBI   OPS  SB
Harmon Killebrew     4      16   895

Notes

The Twins only have a 6 run differential so they have little room for error given the Boston Red Sox ( 10-9) and  California Angels (9-7) are hot on their tails.
