Notes:
The Diamond Mind Board Companion software posts the leaders in the MVP and Cy Young voting. Steve Whitaker has 3 HR and 10 RBIs, Mickey Mantle has 3 HR and 9 RBIs. Eddie Watt leads the Cy Young race.
The Yankees take an early lead after 40 games played on the 180 game schedule.
They have several players with high injury ratings but they have escaped the injury bug so far and are riding high at the moment. Mantle and Whitaker have provided the fire power. Stottlemyre and Peterson posted CGs during the surge. The brittle Whitey Ford has been moved to a closer role with the hope he can be used in high leverage situations without too much strain on his arm.
California posted 4 wins in chapter 2 thanks to playing the lower part of the project schedule. The Angels are one of several 1967 AL teams who chased Boston down to the wire for the pennant. Baltimore also has a playoff ticket in the early part of this project and the White Sox and Tigers are playing .500 ball. The Red Sox are off to a slow 1-3 start. They did split the first 2 games of the season against the Cardinals but dropped tilts against the Tigers and Yankees. Red Sox nation can take some solace in the fact there are 140 games left in the project and Boston has the ability to put together a few hot streaks.
The Giants hold down the #4 position with a 4-2 record. Gaylord Perry has a 1.08 ERA , a .078 WHIP and 16K in 16IP. A major area of concern is Willie Mays' slow start. His 250/222/472 slash line is the worst of his career but it is early in the season and the Giants are a solid ballclub which can go all the way if Mays turns it around over the rest of the project.
Cincinnati made the playoffs in the 65 and 66 projects and still hold a playoff ticket early in the 67 project but you can tell the team is battling an aging roster. Tommy Harper leads the Reds with a 838 OPS while flamethrowing phenom Gary Nolan has a 1.65 ERA, a .98 WHIP and 12K in 16 IP.
The Cardinals hold the last playoff slot thanks to a tie breaker rule which says the team with the most MLB wins in 67 gets the slot. Another rule which could influence St. Louis' chances. Starting rotations are based on IP so Gibson who broke his leg in the 67 MLB season has the #4 slot in the Cardinal rotation. It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals fare in a project which will require him to face some competitive AL teams.
Now it's on to Chapter 3 in the 1967 Gowdy project. Enjoy the day.
