Chapter 3 Notes

1. Giants take the lead.....

The Giants rank 5th in the OPS , 5th in the ERA and 15th in FLD.
Willie McCovey (395/553/948) and Ollie Brown (300/568/868) are the leading hitters.   Gaylord Perry ( .70 ERA, .82 WHIP  (2-0) ) and Juan Marichal  3.38 ERA 1.25 WHIP and (2-0) head the rotation.

While the Giants are off to a fast start, they still need Willie Mays ( 200/182/382) to break out of his slump.

2.  Angels surprise the league.....

Cal ranks 1st in ERA, 8th in OPS and 18th in FLD.
The outstanding rotation includes Jim McGlothin (2-0) 11K and 2.45 ERA, Riley Clark (2-0) 13K and 0.67 ERA , Jack Hamilton (1-1) 7K and 1.35 ERA and George Brunet (1-1) 8K 1.69 ERA.   Roger Repoz (1.048 OPS) and former Twin Don Mincher (844 OPS) lead the offense.

The Angels need to improve their 18th rank in fielding.

3.  Yankees fight an aging roster ......

The Bronx Bombers rank 2nd in OPS, 6th in ERA and 11th in FLD.
Mantle (1163 OPS) , Whitaker (1019), Pepitone (878) and Horace Clarke (868) ar off to fast starts.  Mel Stottlemyre (2-1) 12K 1.57 ERA and Fritz Peterson (2-1) 7K and 0.56 ERA lead the rotation. Whitey Ford has been given the closer role to reduce the chance of injury and has responded with 3 saves.

The Yankees have a number of aging stars with high injury ratings so it will be interested to see how they can maintain a playoff slot without losing aging stars to injury.

4. Orioles look for more consistency .....

Baltimore ranks 6th in OPS, 7th in ERA and 4th in FLD.  Frank Robinson (993) and Boog Powell (978) are the best hitters and Tom Phoebus (3-0) 30K 1.55 ERA is an early leader in the Cy Young race.  The rest of the roster needs to execute with more consistency if the Orioles will survive the race to the playoffs.

5.  Dodgers try to move on after Koufax' retirement....

Los Angeles ranks 3rd in OPS, 13th in ERA and 14th in FLD.   The Dodger hit parade has surprised the whole league.   Willie Davis (1071), Ron Hunt (1021), Dick Schofield (987), Lou Johnson (875) and Jim Lefebvre (837) are all exceeding expectations.  While Claude Osteen (2-0) 9K 1.12 ERA, Don Sutton (2-0) 15K 5.79 ERA and Don Drysdale (1-1) 6k 2.93 ERA are holding their own, the rest of the pitching staff is underperforming.

6.  Houston barely holding on...

Astros rank 4th in OPS, 16th in ERA and 9th in FLD.  Houston fans are happy to pay the price of admission to see Jim Wynn (1035), Joe Morgan (1031), Eddie Mathews (856) and Rusty Staub (889) put fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers.  Don Wilson (1-0) 11K 3.00 ERA, Mike Cuellar (1-0) 17K 3.60 ERA and Larry Dierker (1-0) 4K 0.00 ERA are legitimate pitchers but the Astros have to figure out how to deal with an inferior bullpen.

Well, that's the way it was in Chapter 3 and it's on to Chapter 4.
