1967 GOWDY IP PROJECT: CHAPTER 7 REPORT

CLEMENTE LEADS PIRATES' SURGE INTO SECOND PLACE

The project series  is named in honor of the great broadcaster Curt Gowdy.

SCHEDULING

REGULAR SEASON

This year I will use a straight KOH schedule.  I start by listing the teams based on total wins in the season.  Second,  the NL and AL champs will play the first 2 games of the season.   The regular season schedule includes 180 games broken up in  9 chapters of 20 games each.

PLAYOFFS

Top 6 teams qualify for the playoffs.  Teams are ranked 1 through 6.

1.  6 at 5:      best of 3
2.  W1 at 4:  best of 3
3.   W2 at 3:  best of 5
4.  W3 at  2:  best of 7
5.   W4 at 1:  best of 7

PAST CHAMPIONS

1965:  Milwaukee Braves
1966:   Pittsburgh Pirates

CHAPTER 7 NOTES

140 games are in the books with 40 left to play before the playoffs begin.

Ferguson Jenkins and Bill Hands combined for a shutout and a 3-0 win over the Phillies. Philadelphia finished the chapter 0-1 but retained first place with a 18-7 record.

The Cubs went 2-1 with impressive wins over Philadelphia and St. Louis before falling to the Angels.

The Pirates went 7-1 in the chapter boosting their record to 16-7.  The winning surge propelled the defending Gowdy Project champs to 2nd place in the pennant race.  The Pirates are only 2 games behind the Phillies with 40 games left in the season.  Roberto Clemente (337/562/899) now leads the MVP race with a 49-44 lead over Dick Allen.  Pittsburgh has also been bolstered by a trio of lights out relievers in Steve Blass, Bruce DalCanton and Roy Face.

The Cardinals (14-7) entered the season as the defending 1967 MLB World Series champs.  That was an amazing achievement considering Bob Gibson missed time with a broken leg. St. Louis has the ability to erase the 4 game deficit they currently face but Orlando Cepeda ( 372/479/851) will need some more help from his teammates given the team ranks 13th in OPS.  Lou Brock (372/489/861) (10 SBs) and Tim McCarver (391/617/1008) are helping Cepeda keep the Cards in the race.
The Cardinals rank 6th in ERA and that can improve given a rotation of Hughes, Washburn,  Carlton and Gibson and a competent bullpen.

The Angels (11-6) rank 2nd in OPS and continue to rely on it and hope that will be enough to earn a playoff ticket.

The Yankees surprisingly hold the 5th slot in the playoff race thanks to HOFers like Whitey Ford ( 0-0-4) 3.12 and Mickey Mantle 940. It will be interesting if the Yankees can continue their hot hitting streak.

The Giants (10-7) continue to bewilder baseball analysts.  San Francisco ranks 2nd in OPS and 1st in ERA.  The Giants went 1-1 in the chapter with a 7-3 win over the Yankees and a 3-1 loss to the Pirates.  The numbers indicate the Giants are ready to move up in the standings.

In other news:

The Boston Red Sox (3-8) continue to flounder.  It is hard to keep hope when Boston loses 1-0 to the Senators  and 14-10 to the Mets. Yaz ( 1105) is doing his part but the pitching may be too much to overcome.

Check out the numbers then it is on to Chapter 8...
